How CBSE Class 11 subject choice works
The rules in plain English, based on the CBSE scheme of studies for 2026-27. Your school's own subject blocks decide what is actually available.
The structure at a glance
| Slot | What goes here | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A language (compulsory) | English Core (301) |
| 2 to 4 | Three electives, academic or a second language | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics |
| 5 | One more elective, language or skill subject | Computer Science |
| 6 (optional) | Additional subject, often a skill subject | Artificial Intelligence (843) |
| Internal | School-assessed, no board exam | Work Experience, Health & PE, General Studies |
Questions students ask
How many subjects do I take in CBSE Class 11?
Five main subjects are compulsory: at least one language plus electives. You may add a sixth subject as an additional subject. Your school also runs internal subjects such as Work Experience, Health and Physical Education and General Studies, which do not have board exams.
Do I have to choose Science, Commerce or Humanities?
CBSE itself no longer requires fixed streams. You can combine subjects across streams, for example Physics with Economics, or Computer Science with Psychology. In practice your school groups subjects into timetable blocks, so ask for its blocks before deciding.
Which language is compulsory?
At least one language is compulsory. Most schools make English Core (301) the default. If you take two languages, one of them must be English or Hindi. You cannot take the Core and Elective versions of the same language together.
Can I take Mathematics if I took Basic Maths in Class 10?
CBSE norms allow Mathematics (041) only for students who passed Class 10 Maths Standard. Students with Basic can take Applied Mathematics (241). CBSE has allowed schools to make exceptions in some years, so ask your school.
What is the difference between Mathematics and Applied Mathematics?
Mathematics (041) is the full course with calculus, trigonometry, vectors and 3D geometry, needed for JEE and most science degrees. Applied Mathematics (241) focuses on statistics, financial maths and data interpretation. It suits Commerce and Humanities and is accepted for many BBA, B.Com and Economics programmes, but not for engineering.
Which subjects cannot be taken together?
Mathematics and Applied Mathematics; Computer Science and Informatics Practices; more than one Fine Arts subject (Painting, Graphics, Sculpture, Applied Art); more than one Music subject; more than one Dance subject; and the Core and Elective versions of the same language.
Can a Humanities student take Computer Science?
Yes, if the school offers it in the Humanities block. CBSE does not restrict it. Computer Science (083) is deeper and programming-heavy; Informatics Practices (065) is lighter and focuses on data analysis with Python and SQL.
What does the sixth (additional) subject do?
It is a safety net. If you fail one of your academic electives and pass the sixth skill subject, the skill subject can replace the failed one in the result. It does not automatically raise your percentage, and most college admissions now depend on CUET, JEE or NEET scores rather than board percentage.
Is History compulsory in Humanities?
No. No elective is compulsory under CBSE rules. Some schools build their Humanities block around History and Political Science, so check what your school requires.
Do skill subjects count for college admission?
Board results count all your subjects, but most central universities map CUET domain tests to academic subjects. A few skill subjects, such as Mass Media Studies, have a matching CUET domain test. Keep at least four academic subjects if you are aiming for universities through CUET.
Can I change subjects after starting Class 11?
Schools often allow changes in the first few weeks of Class 11, subject to seats and timetable. Changes later are difficult because CBSE registers subjects for Class 11 and 12 together. Decide carefully, but do not panic if you need to switch early.
Which subjects keep the most options open?
Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics keep engineering, architecture, pilot training, merchant navy and NDA Air Force or Navy open. Adding Biology adds medicine. But a combination you cannot sustain for two years closes more doors than it opens, because marks and entrance scores drop. Interest and ability matter as much as options.
What are the new 2026-27 changes?
CBSE is moving to new NCERT textbooks under NCF 2023 and is introducing Standard and Advanced levels in Maths and Science from Class 9. Class 11 subject rules remain broadly the same. Check your school's circular for the year you enter Class 11, because CBSE has discussed extending two levels to Classes 11 and 12.
